Course Description

Introducing Archaeology offers a broad introduction to this fascinating discipline. By examining case studies from around the world we explore the methods and techniques archaeologists use, and discover how these help us to understand past societies.

Learners work through the programme under the guidance of the course tutor, and can access their study materials 24/7. The course is suitable for beginners, and no prior knowledge of the topic is required. Learners who do have some experience in the subject will have many opportunities to deepen their knowledge and understanding.

Course materials, readings and interactive learning experiences are accessed through the Academy’s virtual learning environment (VLE). Engaging with the tutor and with other learners is a key element of this learning experience.

Course Content

In this course we cover the following topics:

  • What is archaeology? Exploring definitions;
  • Desk-based and archival research;
  • Field survey;
  • Excavation: strategies and techniques;
  • Archaeological recording;
  • Principles of archaeological photography;
  • Artefacts: processing and analysis;
  • Conservation issues: protecting world heritage;
  • Want to be an archaeologist? Getting involved.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the development of archaeology as a discipline, including major theories and approaches;
  • Discuss important sites and archaeological case studies from a range of countries and periods;
  • Evaluate some of the key methods and techniques used in modern archaeological fieldwork, survey and artefact analysis;
  • Identify major current issues in the protection of important heritage sites;
  • Develop a personal action plan for becoming more involved in archaeology after the course.

Course Duration:The programme runs for six weeks.
Learner Support:Continuous tutor support is integrated into teaching and assessment.
Assessment:Assessment includes quizzes, forum discussions and written assignments.
Award:Atikkam Award in Archaeology.
