Course Description

The modern country of South Africa is defined, in the minds of many, by the rich cultural diversity of its population. The coexistence of these different identities and histories has given rise to the nation’s greatest tragedies and most noble triumphs, and continues to influence South Africa’s social, political and economic mileau.

A History of South Africa tells the story of this colourful and dramatic country, from its indigenous roots to the challenging realities of the present day. We explore the origins and influences of socio-economic tensions and political controversies, while examining the remarkable successes that have given South Africa a key role on the global stage of the 21st century.

Course Content

In this course we will study the following topics:

  • Roots: the Khoisan of southern Africa;
  • Iron using peoples;
  • Early European visitors;
  • Entering the Colonial era;
  • Apartheid;
  • Winds of change;
  • After Mandela;
  • South Africa today.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a general understanding of major phases and events in South African history;
  • Discuss the historical experiences and achievements of different South African peoples;
  • Evaluate the influence of the philosophies and actions of key historical figures;
  • Identify major driving forces behind the socio-economic status quo of the modern South Africa.

Course Duration:The course is self-paced, but generally takes between three and six months.
Learner Support:Continuous tutor support is integrated into teaching and assessment.
Assessment:Formative assessment includes quizzes, forum discussions and written assignments.
