Course Description

This introduction to ancient Egypt offers a concise overview of the origins, development and decline of ancient Egyptian civilization. Our emphasis is on the archaeological record, and we place many of the popularly known sites and monuments into their cultural and historical context. We also examine the most recent research developments in Egyptology.

Learners work through the programme under the guidance of the course tutor, and can access their study materials 24/7. The course is suitable for beginners, and no prior knowledge of the topic is required. Learners who do have some experience in the subject will have many opportunities to deepen their knowledge and understanding.

Course materials, readings and interactive learning experiences are accessed through the Academy’s virtual learning environment (VLE). Engaging with the tutor and with other learners is a key element of this learning experience.

Course Content

In this course we cover the following topics:

  • Introduction: Who were the ancient Egyptians?
  • Geography of Egypt;
  • History 1: Middle Kingdom to early New Kingdom;
  • History 2: High and later New Kingdom;
  • History 3: Third Intermediate Period to Alexander the Great;
  • Economy;
  • Temples, ritual and worship;
  • Art and architecture;
  • Language and writing;
  • Death, burial and the afterlife.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a general understanding of the history and geography of ancient Egypt;
  • Discuss ancient Egyptian culture, lifestyles and achievements;
  • Evaluate the cultural and historical significance of high-profile archaeological discoveries;
  • Identify some of the major driving forces behind the rise and fall of ancient Egyptian civilisation.

Course Duration:The course runs over a period of 10 weeks.
Learner Support:Continuous tutor support is integrated into teaching and assessment.
Assessment:Assessment includes quizzes, forum discussions and written assignments.
Award:Atikkam Level 3 Award in Ancient Egypt.
